Bursaries available for GP research, training

GPs and GP Registrars across Queensland are invited to apply for $20,000 research and training bursaries to honour the legacy of General Practice Training Queensland (GPTQ).

GPTQ delivered the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) training program in Queensland for 20 years, allowing doctors to achieve recognition as GPs.

From this year, this has been transitioned into College-led GP training and GPTQ is being dissolved as an organisation.

AMA Queensland Foundation, the charitable arm of AMA Queensland, successfully applied for funding to continue the GPTQ legacy to provide GPs with training and research opportunities.

“GPTQ made an outstanding contribution to training and building a robust GP workforce,” AMA Queensland President Dr Maria Boulton said.

“So many Queensland GPs came through GPTQ and they make up such an important part of our workforce.

“That legacy is recognised through this bursary and the support it provides to GPs. The bursary aims to increase the quality of healthcare and attract and retain GPs in areas of need.

“We have up to four bursaries of $20,000 each for GPs wanting to undertake research addressing topics relevant to general practice, or looking to train in under-served or rural areas.

“We are calling on all GPs to apply for these bursaries. General practice is such a vital specialty and the AMA Queensland Foundation is honoured to carry on the legacy of GPTQ.”

Applications close at 5pm AEST Friday 23 October 2023. Details are available here.

Background

  •  AMA Queensland Foundation is the charitable arm of AMA Queensland. It was established in 2000 with a mission to improve medical conditions in areas of need.
  • The Foundation provides scholarships for medical students who are undergoing hardship.
  • It also provided flood assistance grants to medical practices and patients in the aftermath of the 2022 South-East Queensland floods.
  • When GPTQ began its dissolution process, the Foundation lodged an Expression of Interest (EOI) to use some GPTQ funds for this bursary.
